Re-connecting and learning together
The School of Information Sciences’ annual Alumni & Friends Day has grown to become a fun and successful event for classmates to reunite and
network, while learning and sharing new knowledge and skills. Alumni & Friends Days is open to students, graduates, and friends of SIS, and
everyone is invited to participate.
The SIS Alumni Board hosts the event and often chooses this day to honor the Distinguished Alumni Award, which was inaugurated at the School’s 30th Anniversary Celebration in 2002. We hope that you will join us for the next Alumni & Friends Day. See details of this and past events below.

Allard’s work with high-tech professionals, document creators, earth scientists and students offers some insights into what might be part of the IP2.0 toolkit and how the fundamentals of librarianship continue to stay relevant in a 2.0 world.
- Franciel Azpurua-Linares (SIS ’98) will speak on “Librarians, Information Engineers, and Knowledge Workers, Oh My.” Her talk will provide a bird's eye view of how the information workers of the 21st Century have access to a variety of non-traditional work opportunities in the fluid landscape and nature of the information world.

Biography
If there is one woman whose name is synonymous with librarianship, it is Peggy Sullivan. Dr. Sullivan was President of the American Library Association from 1980 – 1981 and Executive Director from 1992 to 1994, among other positions at ALA. She has worked in public, school, and academic libraries in Missouri, Maryland, Virginia, and Illinois.
Sullivan has published extensively in professional and educational journals and has written several books, including two children’s books. She has taught in graduate library education programs and was Dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University.
Thoughts on Heroes
“It’s funny how often heroes come up, one way or another, in conversation and correspondence,” Sullivan says. “In preparation for my talk at the University of Tennessee, I have been asking other librarians about their heroes and learning how varied they are. There are whole groups of heroes who have been significant in library history, others who are memorable for a single decision or action.
I have also begun to wonder: do we choose heroes who are what we would want
them to be, then try to emulate them, or do they become our heroes because
they have gone before us in paths similar to the ones we have chosen?”
2005 SIS Alumni & Friends Day
On May 21, 2005, the alumni board chose to use Alumni & Friends Day
to celebrate East Tennessee’s early history while remembering its library
and information sciences roots. Steve Cotham, reference manager of the
McClung Historical Collection at the East Tennessee History Center, gave
attendees a memorable behind-the-scenes tour of the brilliantly renovated
McClung Historical Collection for genealogical and historical research and
the Knox County Archives.
Afterwards, the group walked across the street where former UT Chancellor
Bill Snyder led a tour of the renovated Tennessee Theatre. Later, attendees
met with library “movers and shakers” for dinner.
2004 SIS Alumni & Friends Day
On June 12, 2004, the SIS Alumni Board presented a program on “Advocacy
for Libraries,” which included presentations and sessions on working with
government officials and policymakers to support the work of libraries.
Interim director Doug Raber addressed advocacy broadly, while keynote
speaker Judith Gibbons, a member of the ALA Advocacy Committee, discussed
strategies for effectively gaining and keeping the attention of policymakers
in local government.
