Award-winning children's illustrator Christopher Myers spoke on behalf of the Center for Children's and Young Adult Literature on Friday, April 17. Mr. Myers spoke for approximately one hour, answered questions from the audience, and then signed books.
This event was part of the CCYAL's 10th anniversary celebration. In the spring of 1999, Suzanne Fisher Staples gave the first lecture for the CCYAL. In 2004, Jack Gantos helped the Center to celebrate its 5th birthday. In 2009, the CCYAL welcomed Christopher Myers who spoke about his art, his vision, and his collaboration with his father, 2009 Arbuthnot Lecturer Walter Dean Myers.
On Saturday, April 18, Walter Dean Myers, author of countless awards for his books and poetry for children and teens, spoke at the Haley Farm in Clinton, Tennessee as the 2009 May Hill Arbuthnot Lecture. The CCYAL co-sponsored this event along with the Children's Defense Fund's Langston Hughes Library. Over six hundred people attended the day's activities.
“To be awarded the Arbuthnot Honor Lecture is an outstanding accomplishment,” said Dr. Ed Cortez, Director and Professor at the School of Information Sciences at UT. “I am so proud of our school faculty and our Center for Children’s and Young Adult Literature for helping to bring this lecture and the stature it brings to our school, our Center, and to the people of East Tennessee.”
