Technology at SIS - The Essentials
Information Technology Orientation Slides
Information technology is a vital resource for the faculty, staff and
students at the School of Information Sciences. We are committed to ensuring
that the IT resources available at SIS are a useful tool, not a hindrance.
The following IT resources are key components to your experience as a
student at the University of Tennessee. Once you know what they are and how
to use them, you'll have access to most IT resources at UT. A good place to
start is UT's OIT home page. The Office of Information Technology also provides "Show Me" files, which offer video demonstrations with step by step instructions on various computing topics.
We have posted a list of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Competencies expected of incoming SIS students, and a list of ICT Learning Resources.

NetID
All faculty, staff, and students of the University of Tennessee are
provided with a NetID. When used with its associated password, the NetID
provides access to network-based services at the University. For instance,
you can use your NetID to look up articles in library databases, buy parking
permits, or access the Blackboard course management system. Your NetID is
also used to access your email account on the central mail server.
More Information:
E-mail is a vital tool for communicating information among SIS students,
faculty and staff. To facilitate this, the university provides e-mail

storage space. This space can be used to store files, eliminating the need
to carry around jump drives. Your Unix account also provides
the means to setup your own personal web page on the web.utk.edu server.
Once you setup your web space, you can access your site by going to
