Facebook UX Researcher Honored with UT Accomplished Alumni Award

Facebook User Experience Researcher Reggie Murphy was presented with the University of Tennessee Accomplished Alumni Award on Friday, January 26, 2018 in recognition of his notable career successes and distinction in his field. Murphy, who began his time at Facebook as a user experience research manager in 2016, obtained his PhD in Communications from the UT College of Communication and Information (CCI) in 1998 and his Master’s in 1994.

Prior to joining Facebook, Murphy spent: four years with Electronic Ink as a principal consultant; twelve years with Gannett as general manager of corporate research, general manager of audience research, director of research services and manager of marketing research; and two years at Frank Magid Associates as a research analyst.

Murphy was back on campus to present a public lecture for UT students, faculty and staff and to meet with CCI doctoral, master’s and undergraduate students. He answered questions about a wide variety of topics including careers at Facebook and shared his insights on how best to prepare for a successful career.

“Take advantage of every opportunity with which your employer presents you to take classes and workshops to enhance your skills,” said Murphy. “Never stop learning. My degrees from the University of Tennessee were the beginning, not the conclusion of my education.”

CCI Dean Mike Wirth who presented the award to Murphy at the beginning of his public lecture said “Reggie Murphy is deeply passionate about creating a human-centered world. With over 2 billion users, Facebook presents him with unique challenges and opportunities as a user experience researcher. He has had a remarkable professional career and is a great role model for our students!”

A variety of outstanding alumni have been featured through UT’s Accomplished Alumni Program including corporate executives, Olympians, authors, artists, journalists, musicians, U.S. Ambassadors, inventors, researchers, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and civic leaders [for a list of all past honorees see http://alumni.utk.edu/s/1341/alumni/interior_alumni.aspx?sid=1341&gid=2&pgid=7727].
