Dr. Steve Smith to Give Rothrock Lecture

Dr. Steve SmithDr. Steve Smith, Dean of UT Libraries and SIS Adjunct Faculty Member will give the Rothrock Lecture, "Old Friends and
New Enemies (And Vice Versa): Challenges Research Librarianship for the 21st Century".  The lecture and dinner will be Thursday May 10, 2012 with dinner beginning at 6 pm and the lecture will be at 7 pm.

(Knoxville, TN) The 2012 Children’s Festival of Reading will have audiences starry-eyed! Dream Big is the theme of the summer, and it is particularly fitting as the lineup of featured guests is a virtual constellation of star power. From Biscuit and Babymouse to the Backyardigans and Ella Enchanted, this year's Festival plays host to some of the most highly acclaimed legends in children's literature.  

Joining us on Saturday, May 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in World's Fair Park at the 8th annual kick off celebration for the Knox County Public Library's Summer Reading Programs are authors and illustrators who dreamed big and made it: Alyssa Capucilli, Jennifer and Matthew Holm, Gail Carson Levine, Dan Yaccarino, David Ezra Stein, Dianne de Las Casas and many more.

CCYAL Presents Nina Crews

The CCYAL presents critically acclaimed children's book author and illustrator Nina Crews as our spring semester 2012 guest lecturer on Tuesday, March 6.

The lecture will be held in the University of Tennessee's College of Communication and Information (CCI) Auditorium, Communications Building, 345 Circle Park Drive.

The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. A book signing will follow.

The event is free to the public. Paid parking is available in UT's University Center Garage.

Two Important Lectures in February

The first lecture will feature Drs. Shirley and Wayne Wiegand.  The lecture title is, "Free to All?  The Painful Process of Desegregating Public Libraries in the American South." The lecture is co-hosted with the Hodges Library.

SIS Adjuncts Add Expertise to Research

Continuing in the tradition of excellence, the School of Information Sciences highlights two adjunct professors of merit. Both adjuncts will work with SIS faculty and the Center for Information and Communication Studies on research studies,especially those focusing on scholarly communication, mobile information and behavior in the digital space.

Successful Exploration in Cuba

Dr. Cortez Meeting with Cuban IS ProfessorsWith the U.S. Government approval of educational exchange travel to Cuba, Dr. Ed Cortez from the School of Information Sciences joined a Special Libraries Research Delegation on a late October trip to the island nation. Cubans have been able to achieve notable success in information storage and retrieval systems over the years. The U.S. researchers were on a mission to understand the special challenges and the innovative solutions employed by the Cubans. Dr. Cortez was specifically interested in understanding the education of these information professions and the support they received.
