Fall Research Forums 2004

The School of Information Sciences will host two research forums this fall: October 27 and November 10.

This fall's first research
forum on October 27 will feature presentations on Internet advertising
research and electronic journal use.

SIS graduate students Yan Zhang and Beverly Simmons will open the first
forum with a discussion of their research with Dr. Carol Tenopir on the
Use of Electronic Science Journals in the Undergraduate Curriculum.

Also, Advertising Associate Professor Dr. Sally J. McMillan and her
graduate student Juran Kim will discuss the emerging field of Internet
advertising research:  A Bibliometric Analysis of Research Published in
Major Advertising Journals.

SIS research forums are informal and open to everyone. Feel free to bring your lunch.

What: SIS Research Forum

When: 1:30 - 3:00, Wednesday, October 27

            1:30 - 3:00, Wednesday, November 10

October 27 Program
:

Part I

Use of Electronic Science Journals in the Undergraduate Curriculum: An Observational Study

by SIS students Yan Zhang and Beverly Simmons

Abstract

Phase 2 of a 3-phase project funded by the NSF-National

Science Digital Library Project observed undergraduate and

graduate engineering, chemistry, and physics students and

faculty while they searched the ScienceDirect e-journals system

for scholarly science journal articles for simulated

class-related assignments. Think-aloud protocol was used to

capture affective and cognitive state information, while online

monitoring provided an automatic log of interactions with the

system. Pre- and post-search questionnaires and a learning style

test provided additional data. Preliminary analysis shows

differences in search patterns among undergraduates, graduates,

and faculty. All groups used basic search functions the most,

but only faculty used help functions. Graduate students on

average spent more time per session and viewed more pages.

Further analysis, including analysis of affective and cognitive

reactions is continuing.

Part II

The emerging field of Internet advertising research:

A bibliometric analysis of research published in major advertising journals

Presenters: Sally J. McMillan and Juran Kim

Abstract

This study analyzes authorship, citation, and co-citation

patterns of research that focuses on Internet advertising in

three primary venues: The Journal of Advertising, the Journal

of Advertising Research, and the Proceedings of the American

Academy of Advertising. The purpose of the article is to

attempt to map this emerging academic field and identify key

contributing fields of literature and authors that are shaping

study of Internet advertising.

November 10 Program:

Dr. Gretchen Whitney and two SIS students will present their research in the second fall research forum.

When: 1:30 - 3:00, Wednesday, November 10

Where: Communications Bldg. Room 321A

Part I

Presenters: Steve Bales and Jason Rieger will begin the forum with:

Survey of Learners' Knowledge Structures: Rationales, Methods
and Instruments

Abstract: This project is a field experiment designed by Peiling
Wang and collaborated with graduate students Steve Bales, Jason Rieger,
and Yan Zhang. The study observed how learners built and organized
concepts during courses. Metacognitive tools were used to organize
concepts and to measure knowledge structure. The
results have implications for both course design and information retrieval.

Part II

Next Dr. Gretchen Whitney will present:

Using Current Information Technologies to Support Patient and Physician
Understanding of Medical Literature

Abstract: Ranganathan's Colon Classification Concepts Brought
into the 21st Century: The Application of Spreadsheets in
Information Presentation and Retrieval to Support Patient and
Physician Understanding of Medical Literature.
