Director of the School of Information Sciences
The School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee is
accepting applications and nominations for the position of Director.
The School seeks a leader with a demonstrated record of scholarship and a
commitment to educational innovation and academic excellence.
Reporting to the Dean of the College of Communication and Information, the
Director participates in College strategic planning and development, and is
responsible for the School’s accreditation, budget, management, curriculum
planning, faculty review, and addressing the needs of on-campus and distance
education students. The Director will maintain close relations with
the academic community, alumni, and information professionals.
The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate in library and
information science or a related discipline, be eligible for tenure at the
University of Tennessee at the rank of Professor, possess excellent
communication skills, and have the ability to work creatively in a diverse
environment, and integrate developing information technologies into the
School’s curriculum. The School seeks candidates with a vision of the roles
of information professionals in a changing world. An entrepreneurial spirit
in areas of educational and research opportunities is a must. Applicants

Required Qualifications

The School of Information Sciences is part of the University of Tennessee
College of Communication and Information. SIS offers an ALA-accredited
master’s degree program in Information Sciences in both traditional
on-campus mode and interactive synchronous web-based mode. Twelve full-time
faculty, plus regional and international lecturers and practitioners, teach
over 200 students in our Master of Science program. A comprehensive program
review by the American Library Association in 2002 gave the SIS master’s
degree program the maximum 7-years of accreditation. The School also
collaborates in an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in the College of
Communication and Information and offers undergraduate classes. The
University of Tennessee, the state's flagship comprehensive research
institution and a land-grant university, has over 27,000 students and 10,000

Terms of Appointment
This is a tenure-track, 12-month appointment, with an anticipated starting
date of July 1, 2005. Salary range is competitive with Director positions at
other ALA-accredited programs.
