Ugandan Library School Director to Visit SIS

Dr. Issac Kigongo-Bukenya, Director of the East African School of Library and Information Science (EASLIS), will be the featured speaker at a brown bag lunch gathering on Tuesday, January 18, in the Communication Bldg. on the UT campus.

Dr. Bukenya will open the lunch by speaking on the “Challenges and
prospects of LIS Education in Uganda and Africa.”

Last September, the School of Information Sciences established a
partnership with (EASLIS) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding that
opened the door for faculty and student exchanges and collaborative research

Biography

Professor Kigongo-Bukenya is the third Ugandan to receive a Ph.D. in
the library and information sciences and one of Uganda’s longest serving
librarians. He attended school under British colonial rule and qualified as
a teacher one year after Independence in 1963. Today he is director of the
East African School of Library and Information Science, one the most
prestigious LIS training schools in East and Central Africa.

Across Africa, Dr. Bukenya is known for his excellent public relations and
good communication skills. In 1970 he headed the public library system in
eastern Uganda and was instrumental in the establishment of the Uganda
Library Association in 1973. He is active in the International Federation of
Library Associations (IFLA).

He has published widely in the areas of information policy and legislation,
documentation, management and administration, professional ethics, resource
sharing and networking, and public libraries in Uganda.

Between 1967 and 1974, he earned two diplomas in librarianship and public
administration before receiving a master’s degree in Library Studies at
Loughborough University of Technology in 1983. He received his Ph.D. at the
University of Wales in 2001.

Dr. Bukenya is also chairman of the Uganda Football Referees’ Association.
