The School of Information Sciences will sponsor a leadership symposium on October 30, and we invite you to attend a dynamic keynote talk by Jose Aponte at 9:00 a.m. in the University Center Shiloh Room.
Aponte will discuss new leadership paradigms in the Information Age and how leadership must evolve to keep pace with a dynamic information environment in a more multicultural world.
Jose Aponte is the Director of the San Diego Public Library, and he holds a White House appointment to the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries Advisory Council. He was named the 2004 Trejo Librarian of the Year by REFORMA, a national affiliate of the American Library Association. Aponte served as the City Manager of Pikes Peak, Colorado, prior to becoming director of the San Diego County library system.
He has actively promoted library services to Latinos throughout his career and has been a tireless organizer creating councils to represent low-income areas, expanding library hours, creating literacy and cultural programs, and spearheading efforts to build branches in traditionally underserved areas. He has also provided guidance to high school students who formed Latino clubs, and worked with various networking, leadership and advocacy groups.
In partnership with the University of Puerto Rico’s Graduate School of Information Sciences and Technologies, the School of Information Sciences is sponsoring the Intercultural Leadership Toolkit Symposium October 30-31, which brings together faculty and administrators from a variety of disciplines across UT.
SIS is one of four schools within the College of Communication and Information.
