The School of Information Sciences is pleased to announce that our renovated and newly named Dewey’s Den & Commons (DDC) is open for student use. While designing the lab, SIS technology coordinator Cindy Lancaster ensured that the technology and the furniture in the new lab blended together to become not only accessible to everyone but attractive, and even inspiring. The DDC is designed to support student social networking and collaborative learning.
“We were trying to find furniture and technology that everyone would enjoy using and find exciting,” says Lancaster, who has worked on renovating the lab over the summer. “By using Macintosh computers, we are able to offer the best of both the PC and Macintosh worlds. The machines run Windows XP as well as Mac OS X Leopard using Bootcamp, and the iMacs are so much simpler and more attractive than anything else we could have provided,” she continued. Adjacent to the lab is the lounge (Dewey’s Den) where leather coaches and comfortable chairs (forthcoming) provide a place for students to relax between classes.
When students sit down at any of the lab’s 7 iMacs with 24 inch screens, they can boot up either Windows XP or Macintosh (Leopard) platform by logging on with their NetID and password. Each iMac is configured with 4-gigabytes of internal memory, a 500-gigabyte hard drive, and a 2.8 GHz Intel Dual Core processor. Software loaded onto both platforms include: Microsoft Office, SPSS, Endnote, and Adobe Acrobat Pro 9. The Macintosh side also has Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, etc.) and iLife. See the full list of applications below.
A large white board, two bulletin boards, two flatbed scanners, and a duplexing printer are also available for students. Also in Dewey’s Den & Commons are student mailboxes, the school’s Thesis and Dissertation collection, and a small kitchen space. USB Headsets are available for check out from the DE Support person if you want to do your Centra class from the lab. There is a refrigerator and microwave available for student use in the small kitchen area at the back of the DDC.
Dewey’s Den & Commons will be open from 8 am to 9:15 pm M-TH, and 8 am – 5 pm Friday. If you have any suggestions for improving the facility please let us know.
