The School of Information
Sciences Establishes Partnership with Ugandan University
"Uganda is the only developing country to reduce its infection rates of AIDS…
it is the perfect test bed to learn how information has contributed to the declining AIDS rate."
— Dr. Kendra
Albright
NEWS: Dr. Bukenya visits SIS and speaks
at brown bag luncheon.
In September 2004, the School of Information Sciences established a
partnership with the East African School of Library and Information Sciences
(EASLIS) at Makerere University (pronounced Ma-kerry) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding. A feature article in
the fall 2004 issue of the School's newsletter, Interface, discusses the details of the collaboration. "UT SIS and Makerere University Forge Ties" discusses:
- International information policy issues
- Faculty exchanges and collaborative research
- The need for librarians to have multicultural skills and
experiences - Ph.D. student Dick Kawooya’s role
- Information's role in Uganda’s successful efforts to prevent the
spread of HIV/AIDS
The University of Tennessee Libraries also has an Exchange Program with Makerere University. In April, 2002, UT Libraries and Makerere University Library Services initiated a program to launch cooperative exchanges.
