SIS Scholarships
Interested M.S. students must complete the scholarship application associated with each scholarship and fulfill the criteria explained below. The School's scholarships will be awarded at the school's Honors Convocation in April. The deadline is March 1. UT scholarships are also available. The six SIS scholarships available to our graduate students in 2008 are:

- Information International Associates Scholarship
- Carmen L. Moulton Fellowship
- Pioneer Award
- Gary R. Purcell Endowment
- H.W. Wilson Award

Glenn E. Estes Fellowship

The Glenn E. Estes Fellowship is open to all applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age or veteran status with the following summarized restrictions:
- The fellowship will be available to students who are currently enrolled or have been admitted to the University of Tennessee, School of Information Sciences.
- The student(s) awarded this fellowship will be enrolled in the School Library Information Specialist Program.
- The student(s) awarded this fellowship will demonstrate promise as a leader, and must intend to pursue a career in children's and young adult literature.
- The student(s) awarded this fellowship shall have demonstrated excellent academic performance.
- Financial need (in the broadest sense) may be a factor.
Information International Associates Scholarship

This scholarship is established for a full- or part-time student, attending either on-campus or via distance education, who shows unusual promise as a leader, and who intends to pursue a career that encompasses research, innovation, and creativity in the fields of information science and information technology.
The IIa Scholarship is open to all applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status with the following restrictions, summarized from the administrative provisions to this scholarship:
- The student will have completed at least six hours of graduate-level course work in the School of Information Science with a grade point average of at least 3.75 in that coursework.
- The application will include a 250-word statement of the applicant’s career intentions and the endorsement of two faculty members from the School (not written endorsement).
Carmen L. Moulton Memorial Fellowship Criteria

Eligible students must fill out a federal application, the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (additional information), in addition to the SIS Moulton Scholarship application available above.
The Carmen L. Moulton Memorial Fellowship is open to all applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age or veteran status with the following restrictions:
- The fellowship will be available to students who are currently enrolled or have been admitted to the University of Tennessee, School of Information Sciences.
- Selection shall be based upon financial need, not exceptional academic performance. The student(s) awarded this fellowship shall have demonstrated adequate academic performance.
- A student who held the Carmen L. Moulton Memorial Fellowship in a previous year shall have preference in the selection procedure in subsequent years with all other things being equal.
- The recipient of this fellowship shall be a resident of Tennessee or a graduate of a Tennessee high school with preference given to schools in East Tennessee.
Carmen Linkous Moulton was born in 1915, attended Knoxville High School, was an honors student but was unable to attend college. Two of her daughters earned master's degrees from the School of Information Sciences and established this endowed scholarship to advance librarianship by helping students “attain their dreams.”
Pioneer Award Scholarship
Any graduate student enrolled in SIS through the distance education program full-time or part-time is eligible to apply.
The Pioneer Award Scholarship Fund is open to all applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status with the following restrictions:
- The scholarship will be available to students who are enrolled or have been admitted to the University of Tennessee School of Information Sciences.
- Applicants will be pursuing their education through the distance education program.
- Financial need in the broadest sense may be a factor.
- The recipient awarded this scholarship shall be admitted as either a full-time or part-time graduate student with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
- The recipient awarded this scholarship shall have demonstrated professional promise by being active in a professional information sciences organization.
The founder of this yearly scholarship, Mrs. Chrissie Anderson Peters chose to call her award the Pioneer Award in honor of all students who have pursued a graduate-level degree while holding down a full-time position, raising families, and being active in professional organizations. Mrs. Peters notes: “Regardless of the media by which we accomplished such feats, we are all ‘pioneers’!”
Gary R. Purcell Endowment

This award honors the memory of professor Gary R. Purcell, the School’s founding director. This scholarship will go to a student who shows unusual promise as a leader in the field of information sciences, in research and innovation, intellectual activity, and creativity and management. It is an award for overall excellence, rather than excellence in any one particular area. “Leadership” is defined as the ability to make a significant change for the betterment of a group of people, a technology, or institution and to advance the intellectual discipline of the library and information sciences.
The Purcell Scholarship is open to all applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age or veteran status with the following restrictions:
- The scholarship will be available to students who are currently enrolled or have been admitted to the Graduate School, University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
- Financial need (in the broadest sense) may be a factor.
- The student(s) awarded this Scholarship shall have demonstrated successful academic performance.
- The award shall be given to student(s) enrolled in the School of Information Sciences.
- A student who held the Gary R. Purcell Scholarship in a previous year shall have preference in the selection procedure in subsequent years with all other things being equal.
H.W. Wilson Scholarship

Any graduate student enrolled in SIS through the distance education program or who is attending part-time is eligible to apply.
The H.W. Wilson Scholarship will be open to all applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age or veteran status with the following restrictions:
- The scholarship will be available to all distance education or part-time students who are currently enrolled or have been admitted to the University of Tennessee School of Information Sciences.
- The scholarship will be available to those students who demonstrate academic potential.
