About ScienceLinks2

ScienceLinks2:Ph.D. supports six doctoral students in their studies to become science information professors who will (1) educate the next generation of science librarians and science data, information and communication professionals that facilitate the scientific process by being active partners in the full information life cycle, and (2) conduct research related to science data and information. ScienceLinks2: Ph.D.is committed to diversity and encourages students from diverse backgrounds.  ScienceLinks2 students have a science background and/or are interested in conducting research in science information/communication. This program is supported by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

ScienceLinks2 students

  • are each assigned faculty mentors to work with throughout their time in the program.

  • participate in mentored research experiences at science intensive organizations.
  • gain teaching experience and have the opportunity to help develop science data and information related curriculum.
  • develop research skills through mentoring, instruction in grant writing, and participation in UT’s major science data initiatives such as DataONE.  They also have the opportunity to work at major science organizations such as  Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Department of Energy’s Office of Scientific and Technical Information, and the UT Libraries.
  • have the opportunity to earn an interdisciplinary graduate minor in computational science.
  • build collaborative relationships with these institutions that may lead to future research and internship possibilities when they become faculty members.
  • participate in seminars focused on issues related to science information and communication issues.
  • are provided with full tuition and a stipend for up to four years (generally this program can be completed in three years.); have travel support for multiple years, and receive a new laptop computer.
