The School of Information Sciences (SIS)established the Advisory Board in 2006 as a strong voice to ensure the curriculum and strategic plans for the school are aligned to produce a successful graduate program. Recent news story lament the failure of many universities to produce graduates who are prepared to meet the needs of employers. The SIS Advisory Board has an auspicious responsibility to provide wise council for the school and provide an intelligent guiding hand. On September 25 and 26, the SIS Advisory Board gathered in Knoxville for its annual meeting.
The group held an information meeting on Sunday evening at a local restaurant and Dr. Cortez provided a significant amount of foundational material for the board and gave them the State of the School. New board member mingled with continuing board members as they learned more about the expectations of board membership servitude.
Monday’s sessions included a discussion of the school’s strategic plan, review of the results from the 2011 faculty retreat, and analysis of the student learning assessments. Over lunch, Advisory Board members met with groups of current students to listen and discuss input from the students’ perspective. Faculty and members of the school administration were absent from the lunch session to ensure that students were comfortable in having open and candid discussion with members of the advisory board. The resulting data gathered by the board members supplied a very powerful set of useful recommendations and action items for follow-up.
The 2011- 12 SIS Advisory Board members are: Tiffani Conner, Beth Davis-Brown, Janet Drumheller, Hadi Dudley, Wil Hawk, Lynda Lewis, Franciel Azpurua Linares, Julie Loder, Margaret Mellinger, Keith Powell, Steffi Prigoff, Kevin Reynolds, Charles Sherrill, Sandra Treadway, Jessica Waugh, and Lisa Zolly.
