The mission of the Susie McClure Library is to facilitate the leadership, service and social justice education of the American Baptist College community by providing access to quality resources that undergird the professional, academic, personal growth of its students and faculty. Through the use of technology and instruction, the library creates a collaborative and interactive learning center that inspires the community in all area of the lives and presents American Baptist College as a leader in academic research on black church and social justice.
Practicum students will have the option to choose from one of the following major tasks:
-Participate in a major weeding operation of old materials and assist with reclassifying existing and new materials from the Dewey Decimal System to Library of Congress cataloging standards.
-Assist with digitization of archival materials ranging from audio to slides/images. Student will need to be comfortable with taking initiative and exhibiting creativity in putting together digital collections utilizing CONTENTdm software. Prior coursework in digital libraries suggested.
-Assist with the creation of a library instruction/information literacy program. Student will utilize LibGuides to create course and subject guides. Opportunities for in class instruction may arise.
Type of mentoring provided:
Students will work one on one with library staff and the Director of Library Services to achieve goals and learn systems/workflow. We are a small team and this will be a combination of collaborative/individual work.
Level of interaction with others in the organization.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in some faculty meetings and other campus events in order to observe how a small college faculty operates.
