The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries at Vanderbilt University are comprised of nine libraries, including Special Collections & Archives and Fine Arts Gallery. The Central Library, where the practicum would be residing, is the largest of the campus libraries and predominantly serves Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The Libraries are fundamental to the university’s goal of advancing scholarship and learning. We collect, preserve and make accessible a wide variety of resources, we partner with faculty and students to shape research, and we encourage the development of informed scholars and engaged citizens.
This practicum will be particularly exciting to SIS students interested in developing and utilizing their digital technology and creative skills in the context of an academic library. The goal of the practicum is to create mostly digital materials to help our users navigate the Central Library and its services and to tell a compelling library story. Examples of specific tasks include: creating a series of short videos showcasing library services and spaces for library users; presenting data and information in visually appealing manner through use of infographics to inform library patrons; producing digital library maps to highlight study rooms and other useful locations; designing library signs, posters, and flyers.
Type of mentoring provided to the student:
Students will work in tandem with the Library Director, participating in the creative process for projects from conception to completion. The practicum will offer close mentoring, communication, and collaboration between the student and the director but also allow for plenty of independent, off-site work while working on digital materials.
Level of interaction the student will have with others in the organization:
Students will have ample opportunity to interact with all Central Library staff and an opportunity for students to explore different areas of library work.
